Our aim is that children will develop knowledge that will last a lifetime, along with strong skills to prepare them for the world, enabling them to lead a successful life and make a positive contribution to their community.

We carefully consider our children and community to ensure our curriculum is bespoke to their needs. ‘Grammarsaurus’ is our current scheme and has been carefully considered and adjusted to match need for each year group. As a Rights Respecting School, where possible in lessons, links are made to the rights of the child.  Opportunities to promote British Values, SMSC and our equality objectives are incorporated across the Curriculum. Teachers have strong subject knowledge and learning is clearly sequenced over terms, years and throughout the school to ensure knowledge is learnt and embedded.

The ‘Grammarsaurus’ Scheme of Work in Key Stages 1 and 2 is split into three key strands of Chromatic, Monochromatic and Sculpture.

Our 3D curriculum approach ensures that learning is deep, connected, and long-lasting. By regularly revisiting key knowledge and concepts, pupils build on what they already know and make meaningful links across topics. This layered approach helps learning to ‘stick’ over time, strengthening understanding and supporting pupils to apply their knowledge in new and varied contexts. As according to cognitive scientists nothing has been learnt until it is in your long term memory we focus on ensuring learning sticks. We understand through research, including with our children, what aids long term memory and include these strategies in all our teaching sequences. A focus on key knowledge for every topic and a clear assessment, away from the point of learning, demonstrates the effective implementation and impact of our curriculum.

Our Art and Design curriculum provides an outlet for creativity, giving every child the opportunity to develop and refine a broad range of artistic skills. Pupils are encouraged to explore, experiment, and express themselves while developing an appreciation of art in a variety of contexts and cultures. We aim to deliver a curriculum that is accessible to all and inspires pupils to create, innovate, and produce purposeful work through a wide range of artistic experiences.

Children learn about the elements of art in everyday life and explore how art reflects and shapes the world around us. Through studying a diverse range of artists and designers—both male and female—from different periods and backgrounds, pupils gain insight into cultural heritage and global perspectives.

Our Art and Design curriculum nurtures lifelong creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking. It helps pupils develop personal skills such as self-reflection, independence, and the confidence to express individuality through their creative journey.

In the Early Years, our art curriculum is based on the EYFS 2021 framework and inspires creativity, curiosity, and self-expression. Through playful, hands-on experiences, children explore a wide range of media and materials while developing key skills linked to other areas of learning. We provide an enabling environment where children feel confident to experiment, follow their ideas, and take their creativity further. Practitioners support and extend learning through open-ended, imaginative opportunities.

Cross Curricular links:

The skills and knowledge the children use in Art and Design complement those in the rest of the curriculum. These are just some of the ways that Art and Design links to other areas of their study:

Children will have the opportunity to research into chosen artists to widen their knowledge of their techniques.

Within each topic, children are introduced to new artists, past and present.  Historical conversations about artists, their work (influences and impact) and the period of history when they worked are regular.

Children will link their knowledge of shape, patterns, symmetry, etc. when creating and evaluating artwork.
