Music Vision:
At Priory, our aim is that children will develop knowledge that will last a lifetime, along with strong skills to prepare them for the world, enabling them to lead a successful life and make a positive contribution to their community.
Our children are provided with a well taught, knowledge rich curriculum. The basis of this is full implementation of the National Curriculum ensuring breadth, balance and clear progression. Our expectations are high for all pupils: we never narrow our curriculum or deny any pupils the key knowledge taught to the class, unless it is absolutely in their best interest due to a significant learning need.
We carefully consider our children and community to ensure our curriculum is bespoke to their needs. Any purchased schemes are also carefully considered and adjusted to match need. As a Rights Respecting School, where possible in lessons, links are made to the rights of the child. Opportunities to promote British Values, SMSC and our equality objectives are incorporated across the Curriculum. Teachers have strong subject knowledge and learning is clearly sequenced over terms, years and throughout the school to ensure knowledge is learnt and embedded.
Inclusion and Access: Our intent applies to every pupil, including those learning in The Hive and those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). We maintain high ambition for all and adapt the route to achieving it, ensuring every child can access and engage with the key personal, social, health, and emotional concepts within the Music curriculum. Teachers differentiate through visual supports, simplified language, scaffolded discussion, and additional guidance where needed, ensuring lessons remain accessible while preserving essential knowledge and opportunities for reflection. This inclusive approach enables all pupils to develop an appreciation for listening and responding to music, their knowledge and skills in the principals of music and a love of music as a way to express themselves.
Cultural Capital
Cultural capital is the collection of skills and experiences which children need to help them to develop their individual aspirations and thrive in the wider world.
Our musical curriculum is enhanced by a number of additional opportunities for musical experiences with cross curricular links both in school and the wider community. These include:
- Charanga, which supports cultural capital by introducing pupils to a wide range of musical genres and traditions.
- Pupils explore music from different cultures, time periods, and communities around the world.
- Lessons reflect our Christian values of respect, inclusion, and celebration of diversity.
- Encourages empathy, understanding, and appreciation for global musical heritage.
- Helps develop confident, culturally aware learners through engaging, high-quality music education.
- At Priory we have regular Praise Time Worships as an opportunity to praise through song, explore the meaning behind hymns and songs and as an opportunity to try different singing techniques such as singing different parts.
- We host whole school “ISingPop” workshops, including performances for parents (biannually)
- Our Choir perform at a selection of venues and events including Trentham Gardens, the Victoria Hall and local care homes.
- We provide lots of opportunities for the whole school to perform for their families and the wider community including: EYFS Christmas shows, Easter Bonnet Parade, Y1 Christening, KS1 Nativity, KS2 Show, Reception Graduation and the Y6 Leavers Worship Nursery Garden Party
