The aims and vision of introducing 1:1 iPads from Year 1 to Year 6
St Bart’s Trust has identified technology as a key tool in enhancing learning and unlocking every child’s potential across all its schools.
In 2023, we introduced iPads for every pupil in Key Stage 2, and in September 2024, this initiative was extended to include all pupils in Key Stage 1. We have already seen a significant impact on pupils’ engagement, the range of learning activities accessed during the school day, and the accessibility of learning for those who may face barriers.
Following the first year of the project, a greater proportion of Year 6 pupils achieved above their SATs targets than in previous years. Pupils requiring additional support—particularly those with dyslexic traits—made exceptional progress, with some no longer needing provision that differs from or is additional to that of their peers.
Now in the second year of the project, we are continuing to build on this success. Every teacher is confidently embedding digital technology into daily teaching and learning, using iPads to personalise experiences and to promote creativity, collaboration, and independence. Our focus this year is on deepening the purposeful use of educational apps, developing digital literacy, and ensuring technology continues to support strong progress across all curriculum areas.
We are also expanding opportunities for home learning, allowing pupils to connect and extend their learning beyond the classroom. The ongoing impact of the iPad initiative is evident not only in improved outcomes, but also in pupils’ enthusiasm, confidence, and ownership of their learning.
Aims:
To integrate technology effectively into the educational environment, ensuring that pupils have the knowledge and skills that they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
Our vision is to empower pupils to become confident, responsible and digitally literate individuals prepared for a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
4 goals for the project:
- Equip pupils with foundational digital skills and ethical awareness
- Use technology to enhance learning across the curriculum
- Foster creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and problem solving
- Prepare pupils for future education and careers by introducing emerging technologies
Timeline:
This is a 5-year project. We are currently entering Year 3 of the project (2025/2026).
Showbie allows the children to share their work electronically with their class teacher. Teachers can then send children feedback via voice note or in the written form. This means the children are receiving more personalised feedback which will help them progress. Staff share key knowledge mats to help the children retrieve key information and support them in becoming historians, Geographers and Scientists. Videos and explanations can also be shares to help with the developments of new concepts and ideas.
Keynote allows the children to showcase their work and present in in a fun and interactive way. Teachers are also using keynote to develop exciting lessons. Ask your child about how they have used Keynote in school.
iMovie allows the children to bring their learning to life. Children have recorded videos and put themselves in the trenches of WW1. Others have been at battle with Beowulf. This app allows us to showcase the children’s work in a fun and interactive manner. it is also an opportunity to promote editing and technical skills.
